Jonas Vingegaard is a Danish cyclist from Thy and one of the best stage racers in the world: he won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, the Vuelta a España in 2025 and the Giro d'Italia in 2026, making him the first Dane to win all three Grand Tours. Jonas Vingegaard is 29 years old, rides for Visma | Lease a Bike and is number 6 in the UCI World Ranking (as of 22 October 2026). Jonas Vingegaard is not racing today. Most recently he abandoned the Tour de France 2026 (19 July 2026).
Who is Jonas Vingegaard?
Jonas Vingegaard was born on 10 December 1996 in Hillerslev in north-west Jutland as Jonas Vingegaard Rasmussen. After marrying Trine Marie Hansen in 2023 he took her surname, so the UCI and ProCyclingStats now list him as Jonas Vingegaard Hansen. He is 1.75 m tall, and in the peloton he is often simply called "Vinge".
His interest in cycling began on 1 August 2007, when he and his father watched the start of the Post Danmark Rundt in Thisted. He went on to ride for Thy Cykle Ring, Aalborg Cykle-Ring and Odder CK before joining the Continental team ColoQuick in 2016. In those years he worked mornings at the Chrisfish fish factory in Hanstholm, skinning fish from 6am to noon, and trained in the afternoons. In 2019 he joined Jumbo-Visma – now Visma | Lease a Bike – and that summer won stage 6 of the Tour de Pologne, his first WorldTour victory. His contract with the team runs until the end of 2028.
Jonas Vingegaard in 2020 rode his first Grand Tour, finishing 46th at the Vuelta a España as a domestique for Primož Roglič, who won the race. In September 2020 he and Trine had their daughter Frida. The breakthrough came a year later with second place at the 2021 Tour de France, 5:20 behind Tadej Pogačar. The full story is in Jonas Vingegaard's career year by year.
The four Grand Tour wins
His first big win came at the 2022 Tour de France. Vingegaard won the stages to the Col du Granon and Hautacam, took both the yellow and the polka-dot jersey and beat Pogačar by 2:43. He became the second Danish Tour winner after Bjarne Riis in 1996, and on 27 July 2022 around 70,000 people cheered him in Copenhagen's City Hall Square, according to an estimate by city hall staff.

A year later he did it again. His time trial from Passy to Combloux on stage 16 of the 2023 Tour – 22.4 km, 1:38 faster than Pogačar – is regarded as one of the greatest in the race's history, and his final margin in Paris was 7:29. All his starts are covered in Jonas Vingegaard at the Tour de France.
At the Vuelta a España he was second in 2023, 17 seconds behind team-mate Sepp Kuss, but in 2025 he won it with victories on stages 2, 9 and 20 and a 1:16 margin over João Almeida. The fourth Grand Tour came at his first Giro d'Italia in 2026: five stage wins, the pink jersey from stage 14 and 5:22 over Felix Gall. That made him only the eighth rider in history to win all three Grand Tours. Follow his 2026 Giro d'Italia win stage by stage.
The 2026 season and the Tour de France crash
The 2026 season brought overall wins in three of the four stage races he started. He skipped the UAE Tour and opened by winning Paris-Nice, taking stages 4 and 5. Two weeks later he won the Volta a Catalunya with stage wins at La Molina and Queralt, and in May came the Giro. The Italian press nicknamed him "Il Re Pescatore" – the Fisher King – in a nod to his fish-factory past.
The Tour de France started well too. Visma | Lease a Bike won the team time trial in Barcelona on 4 July 2026, and Vingegaard wore yellow after the first two stages. On 19 July he crashed on stage 15 from Champagnole to Plateau de Solaison, about 20 km from the finish in a tight corner. He was second overall, 4:30 behind Pogačar, but broke his collarbone and had to abandon. He had surgery in Denmark, and on 17 August the team said he would not race again in 2026. Read the background in our overview of Jonas Vingegaard's crashes. In the 2026 season he has 13 wins from 51 race days.
What is next for Jonas Vingegaard?
His next race is the Tour de France 2027 (from 2 July 2027), which the team has called the main goal, although the programme is not official yet. The 2027 programme has not been officially announced (as of 25 October 2026). On 22 October 2026 Marc Reef of Visma | Lease a Bike told Cyclingnews that the 2027 Tour de France is the main goal. The race starts on 2 July 2027 in Britain and includes 71 km of time trialling and summit finishes on the Grand Colombier, Les Saisies and the Col du Portet.
Whether he will ride the Giro again, and which races will build his form towards July, has not been announced. Confirmed races go into Jonas Vingegaard's race schedule, and the race today page shows whether he is racing and where to watch.
Jonas Vingegaard in interviews
Vingegaard rarely uses big words, but a few statements have stuck. After winning stage 11 of the 2024 Tour – three months after his heavy crash at the Itzulia Basque Country, where he broke his collarbone and several ribs and suffered a collapsed lung – he said that three months earlier he had really believed he was going to die. During the 2026 Tour he was woken for a doping control at around 2am before stage 15; his comment was that testing is good, but not when it costs riders their sleep.
