Responsible Gambling

Gambling should be entertainment. The rules in Denmark and where to get help.

Jonas Vingegaard Cykling writes about cycling, and on a few pages we discuss odds and bookmakers. That is why we take responsible gambling seriously. Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over only, and it should be a form of entertainment – never a way to make money or solve financial problems.

18+ only and only with a Danish licence

In Denmark you may only gamble once you are 18, and operators must verify your age and identity, usually with MitID. Only use operators licensed by the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden). Only they are bound by the Danish player-protection rules and connected to ROFUS. If you live outside Denmark, follow the rules and help services in your own country.

Set limits before the race starts

Licensed Danish operators must make you set a deposit limit before you can start betting. You choose whether it applies per day, week or month, and if you raise it, the change takes effect after 24 hours at the earliest. A stage race like the Tour de France lasts three weeks with 21 stages and new bets every day, so set a limit for the whole race, not just one stage:

  • Decide in advance how much you will spend and treat it as the price of the entertainment.
  • Never bet with borrowed money or money meant for rent, bills or food.
  • Never chase a loss by staking more on the next stage.
  • Take breaks, and do not bet when you are under the influence, upset or stressed.

Warning signs of a gambling problem

Gambling problems often develop gradually. Pay attention if you recognise one or more of these signs in yourself or someone you know:

  • You spend more money or time on gambling than you planned.
  • You hide your gambling or lie about it to family and friends.
  • You borrow money or sell things to gamble or cover losses.
  • You become restless or irritable when you try to stop.
  • Gambling affects your work, studies, finances or relationships.

ROFUS: exclude yourself from gambling

ROFUS – the Danish register of voluntarily excluded players – is run by Spillemyndigheden. Once registered, you are excluded from all operators with a Danish licence. You can choose a 24-hour break, a temporary exclusion of one, three or six months, or a permanent exclusion. A permanent exclusion does not expire by itself; you can ask for it to be lifted after one year at the earliest. You register with MitID at rofus.nu.

Free help in Denmark

  • StopSpillet – free, anonymous advice on +45 70 22 28 25 and at stopspillet.dk, also for family and friends.
  • Center for Ludomani – free treatment for gamblers and their families, see ludomani.dk.

It is never too early to ask for help, and a conversation commits you to nothing.

How this relates to our site

Our pages on odds and bookmakers are information, not tips or guarantees, and nobody can predict the outcome of a bike race with certainty – a crash or a team decision can change everything in seconds. Gambling ads are labelled “Ad” and are never shown on our legal pages. Jonas Vingegaard and his team have no connection with this site and do not endorse betting on his races. Read more about licences on our page about betting with licensed Danish bookmakers and about our ads on the advertising and affiliate links page.
