The pattern is clear: five Tours in a row in the top two, and every time the rival was Tadej Pogačar. Their duel has its own page: Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar.

2021: From domestique to runner-up on debut

Vingegaard was not meant to lead in 2021. He was called up as a replacement for Tom Dumoulin to help Primož Roglič, but Roglič crashed on stage 3 and withdrew after stage 8, leaving the 24-year-old Dane as Jumbo-Visma's only general classification rider.

He was third in the stage 5 time trial, and on stage 11, with the double ascent of Mont Ventoux, he became the first rider to drop Pogačar on a climb, gaining almost 40 seconds at the top before being caught on the descent. He was second at both Col du Portet and Luz Ardiden, third in the final time trial and second overall, 5:20 behind Pogačar – the first Dane on the Tour podium since 1996.

2022: The first win – Granon and Hautacam

The 2022 Tour started in Copenhagen on 1 July. On stage 5 over the cobbles a mechanical nearly cost him dearly, but team-mates, Wout van Aert among them, limited the damage.

The decisive day was stage 11 to the Col du Granon on 13 July. Jumbo-Visma attacked Pogačar over the Télégraphe and the Galibier, and five kilometres from the top of the Granon Vingegaard went himself. He won the stage, took yellow and gained 2:51 on Pogačar. On stage 18 to Hautacam came the best-known moment of their rivalry: Pogačar crashed on a descent, Vingegaard waited and the two shook hands – before the Dane went on to win the stage and seal the polka-dot jersey.

He won by 2:43 from Pogačar, with Geraint Thomas third at 7:22, becoming the second Danish Tour winner after Bjarne Riis in 1996. With Van Aert in green, one team won yellow, green and the mountains jersey for the first time since 1969. The homecoming is described on our page about the Copenhagen celebration.

The 2023 Tour started in Bilbao and was extremely close for two weeks. Vingegaard attacked on stage 5 over the Marie-Blanque, gained more than a minute on Pogačar and took yellow the next day, even though Pogačar won in Cauterets. After two weeks only about 10 seconds separated them.

Then came the stage 16 time trial from Passy to Combloux on 18 July: 22.4 kilometres that Vingegaard rode 1:38 faster than Pogačar. He called it one of his best days on the bike ever, and it is widely rated among the greatest time trials in Tour history – more on our time trial page. The next day, towards the Col de la Loze, Pogačar cracked early on the final climb and lost almost six more minutes. Vingegaard won by 7:29, the largest winning margin since 2014, with Adam Yates third.

2024 and 2025: Two second places behind Pogačar

Jonas Vingegaard at the 2024 Tour de France

On 4 April 2024 Vingegaard crashed on stage 4 of the Tour of the Basque Country, breaking his collarbone and several ribs and suffering a collapsed lung. He spent 12 days in hospital in Vitoria and was only confirmed for the Tour on 20 June, without a race in his legs. On stage 11 to Le Lioran on 10 July he beat Pogačar in a two-man sprint and said that three months earlier he had really believed he was going to die. He finished second, 6:17 behind Pogačar and 3:01 ahead of Remco Evenepoel, in a Tour that ended in Nice for the first time.

2025: A fifth straight top-two finish

In 2025 he lost 1:03 in the first time trial on stage 5, another 2:07 at Hautacam and more in the mountain time trial to Peyragudes. His attacks on Mont Ventoux and the Col de la Loze were all followed by Pogačar. He finished second, 4:24 down, and second in the mountains classification – his fifth consecutive top-two place.

Tour de France 2026: Yellow, a crash and an early exit

Vingegaard arrived as the winner of the 2026 Giro d'Italia. The Tour opened on 4 July with a team time trial in Barcelona, which Visma | Lease a Bike won by eight seconds, with Vingegaard attacking on the final climb up Montjuïc to take yellow. Two days later Pogačar finished two seconds ahead of him at Les Angles and took the lead, and on stage 6 over the Tourmalet to Gavarnie-Gèdre the Slovenian won by 2:38. After stage 14 Vingegaard was second at around four and a half minutes.

On 19 July, on stage 15 towards the Plateau de Solaison, he crashed and broke his collarbone. He abandoned while second, 4:30 behind, and later had surgery in Denmark; on 17 August the team said he would not race again in 2026. Details are on our crash page. Most recently he abandoned the Tour de France 2026 (19 July 2026).

Tour de France 2027: What comes next

His 2027 programme had not been officially announced as of 25 October 2026, but the team has called the 2027 Tour de France the main goal. The race starts on 2 July 2027 in Britain, with 71 km of time trialling and summit finishes at the Grand Colombier, Les Saisies and the Col du Portet. His next race is the Tour de France 2027 (from 2 July 2027), which the team has called the main goal, although the programme is not official yet. The route is published on letour.fr.
