Jonas Vingegaard's most famous time trial is stage 16 of the 2023 Tour de France from Passy to Combloux, where he beat Tadej Pogačar by 1:38 over 22.4 km. In total he has won four individual time trials and four team time trials, and he has repeatedly finished second or third against the clock at the Tour de France. These are his key time trials – the big wins and the days when the clock was against him.
Jonas Vingegaard in time trials: a climber against the clock
Vingegaard is first and foremost a climber, and his best time trials have come on courses with climbs. The Combloux route included the steep Côte de Domancy, and his Algarve win came on an uphill time trial to Malhão. On long, flat time trials specialists such as Filippo Ganna and Remco Evenepoel have often been faster.
Even so, he has been among the best against the clock at the Tour for years: third twice in 2021, second in the final time trial in 2022, the win in 2023, and second both in Nice in 2024 and on the mountain time trial to Peyragudes in 2025. His full Tour record is on our Tour de France page.
Combloux 2023: the time trial that decided the Tour

Before stage 16 of the 2023 Tour only about 10 seconds separated Vingegaard in yellow from Pogačar. Pogačar started before him on 18 July and set what looked like a winning time, 1:13 faster than Wout van Aert. But Vingegaard led at every time check and finished 1:38 ahead of Pogačar. He called it one of his best days on the bike ever, and commentators widely rated it among the best and most shocking time trial performances in Tour history. The next day Pogačar cracked on the Col de la Loze and Vingegaard went on to win the Tour by 7:29. Combloux remains his only individual time trial win in a Grand Tour.
His time trial wins
According to ProCyclingStats, Vingegaard has won four individual time trials:
- 2018: the prologue of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta (U23) for ColoQuick.
- 26 February 2023: stage 4, the final stage, of O Gran Camiño, 18.1 km.
- 18 July 2023: stage 16 of the Tour de France, Passy–Combloux, 22.4 km, 1:38 ahead of Pogačar.
- 23 February 2025: stage 5 of the Volta ao Algarve, 19.6 km from Salir up to Malhão. He started the day 20 seconds down and won both the stage and the race.
Two of the four – Gran Camiño 2023 and Algarve 2025 – came on the final day of the race and sealed the overall win. His stage race results are collected on our stage races page.
Team time trials
He has won four team time trials: stage 4 of the 2018 Tour de l'Avenir with the Danish national team, stage 3 of Paris–Nice in 2023 and again in 2025, and the opening stage of the 2026 Tour de France in Barcelona. The Barcelona stage used a new format in which the team's time was taken on the first rider across the line while each rider received his own time for the general classification; Vingegaard attacked on the final climb up Montjuïc and took the yellow jersey after Visma | Lease a Bike won by eight seconds. At the 2025 Vuelta his team was second in the Figueres team time trial, eight seconds behind UAE Team Emirates, but he still regained the red jersey that day.

The difficult days against the clock

Time trials have also cost him. At the 2023 Vuelta he lost about a minute to Evenepoel and Roglič on stage 10 in Valladolid, and at the 2025 Tour he lost 1:03 to Pogačar in the first time trial on stage 5, finishing 13th. The most discussed off-day came at the 2026 Giro: on the long stage 10 time trial from Viareggio to Massa he was 13th, about three minutes behind Ganna and, more importantly, 1:06 behind GC rival Thymen Arensman. It is described as a disappointing day, yet he still won the race by 5:22 – see our 2026 Giro page.
Training and equipment – what is known
Neither Vingegaard nor his team has published details of his specific time trial training, position or equipment. That year he also set a record on the Coll de Rates test climb: 6.5 km in 13:02. He is 1.75 m tall and weighs 58 kg according to ProCyclingStats – see his weight and height. No official VO2 max figure has ever been published.
