2026 results

The comeback after the 2026 Tour de France crash

The crash came on 19 July 2026 on stage 15 from Champagnole to Plateau de Solaison. About 20 km from the finish it went wrong in a tight corner, where three other riders also came down. Vingegaard was second overall, 4:30 behind Tadej Pogačar, but broke his collarbone – reportedly the right one – and suffered abrasions. He abandoned the race and had surgery in Denmark. On 22 July Marc Reef of Visma | Lease a Bike told TV 2 that the operation had gone well.

On 17 August the team announced that he would not race again in 2026. According to Cycling Weekly, he explained himself that it was not possible for him to get back to top level in time. That meant he missed both the Vuelta a España, where he was the defending champion, and the autumn races. In October 2026 he was seen training in Mallorca, according to Domestique.

It is not the first time he has had to come back from a serious injury. In 2017 he broke his femur at the Tour des Fjords. On 4 April 2024 he crashed at the Itzulia Basque Country, breaking his collarbone and several ribs and suffering a collapsed lung; he spent 12 days in hospital in Vitoria, yet finished second at the Tour de France three months later and won stage 11. In March 2025 he suffered a concussion at Paris-Nice, and the same year he won the Vuelta. All his crashes are covered in our overview of Jonas Vingegaard's crashes.

Plans for 2027

His 2027 programme has not been officially announced (as of 25 October 2026). On 22 October 2026 Marc Reef told Cyclingnews that the 2027 Tour de France is the main goal. The Tour starts on 2 July 2027 in Britain, with 71 km of time trialling and summit finishes on the Grand Colombier, Les Saisies and the Col du Portet – a route with plenty of opportunities for a two-time winner.

According to Domestique (20 October 2026), the team is still considering whether he should again combine the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. The outlet also mentions interest in the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de Romandie, which he has never won, and in the 2027 Worlds in Haute-Savoie. None of that is confirmed. His contract with Visma | Lease a Bike runs until the end of 2028. Confirmed races go into Jonas Vingegaard's race schedule as soon as the team announces them.

2026 at a glance

Before the crash, 2026 was one of the strongest seasons of his career. He skipped the UAE Tour and won Paris-Nice on 15 March with stage wins on stages 4 and 5 and a 4:23 margin over Dani Martínez. On 29 March he won the Volta a Catalunya after victories at La Molina and Queralt, 1:22 ahead of Lenny Martinez. In Glyngøre, where the family lives, the town was decorated in pink even before the Giro started, according to DR, and on 31 May he won the Giro d'Italia at his first attempt. His stage wins came at Blockhaus, Corno alle Scale, Pila, Carì and Piancavallo, and he wore the pink jersey from stage 14 to Rome, finishing 5:22 ahead of Felix Gall. That made him the eighth rider and the first Dane to win all three Grand Tours. The Italian press nicknamed him "Il Re Pescatore".

At the Tour de France the team won the team time trial in Barcelona on 4 July, and he wore yellow for the first two days. In the 2026 season he has 13 wins from 51 race days. The full season stage by stage is on the Jonas Vingegaard results page, and the Giro win is covered in Jonas Vingegaard at the Giro d'Italia.

The rivals ahead of the 2027 Tour

Tadej Pogačar won the 2026 Tour de France ahead of Remco Evenepoel after Vingegaard had abandoned. That makes it 4–2 to the Slovenian in the six Tours they have both started: Pogačar won in 2021, 2024, 2025 and 2026, Vingegaard in 2022 and 2023. Pogačar also leads the UCI World Ranking with 9,331.8 points ahead of Evenepoel on 7,191.6 (as of 22 October 2026). On the other hand, Vingegaard was the first of the two to win all three Grand Tours.

The 2027 route, with 71 km of time trialling and three summit finishes, sets up another duel between them. How their battles have ended year by year is shown in Jonas Vingegaard vs Tadej Pogačar. New updates on his form and preparation appear in the news list above as soon as the team or the rider speaks.
