Jonas Vingegaard and Doping – The Facts

Every Tour winner gets the question. The documented facts about Jonas Vingegaard and doping control – and what he has said himself.

Updated 25 October 2026 ·

Jonas Vingegaard has never returned a positive doping test and has never been suspended – as of 25 October 2026. Every Tour de France winner is still asked about doping, and Vingegaard has answered the question many times. These are the documented facts: the controls, the single missed test in 2019, his own statements and the night-time control at the 2026 Tour de France.

Jonas Vingegaard and doping – the documented facts

There are no positive tests and no sanctions against Jonas Vingegaard. ProCyclingStats, which keeps records of suspensions and fines for every rider, lists no suspension for him. The same is clear from his Wikipedia articles and from extensive coverage in Danish and international media.

As a rider at the top of the sport he is tested frequently, both at races and out of competition. In November 2023 he told the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet that he had been tested 60–70 times in 2023 alone. Elite riders must always report where they are, so that testers can turn up unannounced – the so-called whereabouts system.

The missed test in 2019

On one occasion testers tried and failed to reach him. That was in 2019, his first season with Jumbo-Visma. According to his own account, his phone was in the kitchen and the doorbell was not working, so he did not hear the testers. He described this himself in an interview with Ekstra Bladet in November 2023.

A single missed test is not an anti-doping rule violation. Under the rules a rider is only sanctioned after three whereabouts failures within 12 months. Vingegaard has not had any others.

What he has said about doping

His most quoted statement came at the 2022 Tour de France. On 23 July 2022 journalist Kate Wagner of Velo asked him why fans should believe in his win. He replied: "We are all totally clean", adding that not one of them was taking anything illegal.

In the Ekstra Bladet interview in November 2023 he went further. He said he does not take anything himself and does not believe the rest of the peloton does either. At the same time he acknowledged that negative tests alone can ring hollow in a sport with cycling's history.

Carbon-monoxide measurements in 2024

In July 2024 Jonas Vingegaard confirmed that Visma | Lease a Bike uses carbon-monoxide rebreathing at its altitude training camps. According to him, the method is used purely to measure blood values and is legal; he compared the amount inhaled to smoking a cigarette. The debate led the UCI to ask the World Anti-Doping Agency, WADA, to take a position on the method.

The night-time control before stage 15 of the 2026 Tour

At the 2026 Tour de France, Vingegaard was woken at around 2am before stage 15 by the International Testing Agency, which runs doping control at the Tour. Tadej Pogačar was tested at around 5am. The controls took place outside normal testing hours and had been authorised by a Paris prosecutor. Vingegaard's reaction was: "It's good that they test, but when it's affecting performance and your sleep, I don't think it's so good." Remco Evenepoel sharply criticised the controls.

The same day Vingegaard crashed and broke his collarbone. Pogačar has suggested the disturbed sleep may have played a part, but that is an opinion, not a documented cause. Read about the crash on the Jonas Vingegaard crash page and about the race on the Jonas Vingegaard at the Tour de France page.

A team-mate's case and the speculation

In 2023 team-mate Michel Hessmann tested positive for a diuretic in an out-of-competition control in June. The case concerned Hessmann, not Jonas Vingegaard. Internet forums carry threads of speculation about Vingegaard, but speculation is not fact and we do not repeat it. Our sourcing principles are set out in our editorial policy.

The question is asked because of cycling's history of major doping cases, not because of any specific information about Vingegaard. The physiological data that are documented about him – including the 2018 Team Danmark test – are on the Jonas Vingegaard weight and height page, where we also explain why we do not publish undocumented power figures.
