Jonas Vingegaard has suffered three crashes with broken bones in his career: a fractured femur at the 2017 Tour des Fjords, the 2024 Itzulia Basque Country crash with a broken collarbone, broken ribs and a collapsed lung, and the 2026 Tour de France crash, in which he broke his collarbone again. Most recently he abandoned the Tour de France 2026 (19 July 2026). There was also the 2025 Paris–Nice crash that left him with a concussion. Here is every Jonas Vingegaard crash with the date, race, injuries and the road back.

The broken femur at the 2017 Tour des Fjords
The first serious crash came when Vingegaard was 20 and riding for the Danish Continental team ColoQuick. On stage 4 of the Norwegian stage race Tour des Fjords on 27 May 2017 he fell and broke his femur. ProCyclingStats estimates around ten weeks out, but in practice most of the season was lost. Before the injury he had finished fourth overall and best young rider at the Tour du Loir-et-Cher.
The comeback became his breakthrough. In March 2018 he set the record on the Coll de Rates test climb in Spain, and that summer a Team Danmark test showed his cardiovascular capacity was well above the average for Danish riders. On 1 August 2018 his move to Jumbo-Visma was announced. The full story is on the Jonas Vingegaard career page.
The 2024 Itzulia Basque Country crash
The most serious crash of his career happened on 4 April 2024, on stage 4 of the Itzulia Basque Country. Around 35 km from the finish, a mass crash on a descent also brought down Primož Roglič, Remco Evenepoel and Jay Vine, and the stage was neutralised. Vingegaard broke his collarbone and several ribs and suffered a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) and a lung contusion.
He had surgery on the collarbone and spent 12 days at Txagorritxu hospital in Vitoria before being discharged on 16 April 2024. Sports director Merijn Zeeman said Vingegaard would only go to the Tour if he was one hundred per cent. He did not race in between, and only on 20 June 2024 was he confirmed in the Tour de France team.
The comeback surprised most observers. On 10 July 2024 he won stage 11 to Le Lioran ahead of Tadej Pogačar and said afterwards: "Three months ago, I really believed I was going to die." He finished the Tour second overall and in August won the Tour de Pologne. The crash was one of the most talked-about moments of the season because three Tour de France favourites – Vingegaard, Roglič and Evenepoel – went down in the same incident.

Concussion at Paris–Nice 2025
At Paris–Nice 2025 Vingegaard had just taken the leader's jersey when he crashed on stage 5 on 13 March. He lost 26 seconds and the jersey to team-mate Matteo Jorgenson and did not start stage 6. Only later did it emerge that he had suffered a concussion; he also had a cut lip and a wrist injury, and had to miss the Volta a Catalunya. In May 2025 he criticised the fact that no race doctor had checked him for concussion after the crash.
He returned at the Critérium du Dauphiné, finishing second, 59 seconds behind Pogačar, and was runner-up again at the Tour de France. At the Vuelta a España he was caught in a crash before the final climb of stage 2 on 24 August 2025, but still won the stage and took the red jersey, which he kept to Madrid. The 2026 Tour de France crash
The 2026 season started with a training crash. In late January he fell on a descent at a training camp near Málaga, and together with an illness that followed, it led the team to withdraw him from the UAE Tour on 6 February. The injuries were not described in detail. He then won Paris–Nice, the Volta a Catalunya and the Giro d'Italia.
At the Tour de France, Visma | Lease a Bike won the opening team time trial in Barcelona and Vingegaard wore yellow after the first two stages. The night before stage 15 he was woken at around 2am for a doping control by the International Testing Agency. On the stage itself, from Champagnole to Plateau de Solaison on 19 July 2026, he crashed about 20 km from the finish on a tight corner where three other riders also went down. At that point he was second overall, 4:30 behind Pogačar.
The diagnosis was a fractured collarbone – reportedly the right one – plus abrasions, and he abandoned the race. The next day he said: "Luckily, it's only a broken collarbone." He had surgery in Denmark, and the team's Marc Reef told TV 2 on 22 July that it had gone well. On 17 August 2026 the team announced that he would not race again in 2026. The whole race is covered on the Jonas Vingegaard at the Tour de France page.
Current status and the 2027 goal
As of 25 October 2026, Jonas Vingegaard's season is over. His next race is the Tour de France 2027 (from 2 July 2027), which the team has called the main goal, although the programme is not official yet. The team has said the goals for 2027 will be set in the coming weeks, but no official race programme has been announced. The 2027 Tour de France starts on 2 July 2027 in Britain. In October 2026 he was seen training in Mallorca.
The pattern from his earlier crashes is the same: after the broken femur in 2017 came his breakthrough, after the Basque Country crash in 2024 he finished second at the Tour, and after the 2025 concussion he won the Vuelta a España. When he races again will appear on the Jonas Vingegaard race schedule.
