Tivoli before the 2022 Tour

The first big public party for Jonas Vingegaard actually came before the win. The 2022 Tour de France started in Copenhagen, and on 29 June 2022 all the teams were presented in Tivoli in front of more than 10,000 spectators. When Jumbo-Visma came on stage, Vingegaard received such a welcome that he was moved to tears, TV 2 reported. Less than four weeks later he won the race in Paris.

The Danes in Paris on 24 July 2022

Before the Copenhagen celebration there was already a party in Paris. Several thousand Danes had travelled to the French capital to see Jonas Vingegaard ride the Champs-Élysées in the yellow jersey, and many gathered in front of the Danish House, Ekstra Bladet reported. At the prize ceremony, attended also by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the then Crown Prince Frederik paid tribute to him, comparing the achievement with Denmark's football European Championship win in 1992. French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated him in Danish on Twitter, and back home the high bridge of the Great Belt crossing was lit up in red and white.

Jonas Vingegaard at City Hall Square, 27 July 2022

Only hours after Vingegaard had all but secured the win, Copenhagen Municipality and Tivoli announced a big celebration for his return. On 27 July 2022 he was flown from Schiphol in Amsterdam in a Semler Group aircraft whose tail had been wrapped in the same yellow as the leader's jersey. On arrival at Copenhagen Airport the plane was escorted by two Danish Air Force F-16s, and around 50,000 people followed the flight on Flightradar24.

From the airport he rode in an open car with a police escort to Copenhagen City Hall. There he was served the traditional City Hall pancakes, and from the balcony overlooking the square he received the cheers together with Trine and their daughter. The square was packed from Strøget to H.C. Andersens Boulevard and some way down Vesterbrogade, and the police had to stop traffic.

How many people were at City Hall Square?

There is no official figure. The police would not give a number, Ekstra Bladet wrote, but City Hall staff estimated around 70,000 people, and that figure is still the best estimate. He left City Hall with the then Lord Mayor, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen.

Jonas Vingegaard in Tivoli and Glyngøre

A few hours after City Hall Square the celebration moved on to the lawn in Tivoli. Vingegaard was cheered there together with Kasper Asgreen, Michael Mørkøv and Christopher Juul-Jensen, who had also ridden the Tour, and according to Tivoli more than 20,000 people took part.

The next day, 28 July 2022, he and his family returned home to Glyngøre in Salling. At the local stadium, Interfjord Park, there was music and fireworks, and according to the police around 22,000–23,000 people came – in a town of about 1,400 inhabitants. More about the town on the page about where Jonas Vingegaard lives.

The celebration after the 2023 Tour win

After his second Tour win Copenhagen repeated the celebration on 26 July 2023, organised by the Danish Cycling Union (Danmarks Cykle Union), Copenhagen Municipality and Tivoli. Vingegaard rode in an open car from Tårnby across Amager to City Hall, arriving around 1pm. Speeches were made from the balcony over the square, and from 4pm the party continued on the Tivoli lawn. Police closed H.C. Andersens Boulevard from around 12.45pm to 2.15pm.

How many came is unclear. The media wrote of thousands, but no official figure for 2023 has been published, so we do not give one. The full Tour story is on the page about Jonas Vingegaard at the Tour de France.

No City Hall Square after the 2025 Vuelta and 2026 Giro

Jonas Vingegaard won the Vuelta a España in 2025 and the Giro d'Italia in 2026, but we have found no information about a celebration at City Hall Square or in Tivoli after either win. The Giro win was celebrated locally instead. Before the race Glyngøre was dressed in pink, DR reported on 30 April 2026, and after the win the town held an informal tribute at Kassehuset on Glyngøre harbour on a Wednesday at 5pm, according to TV Midtvest, where residents could record a video greeting for the family. We have not been able to confirm the exact date.
